HOW TO TEST
A PRODUCT JUST
IN ONE DAY?

PROGRAM

It consist of morning and noon sessions ;

MORNING SESSION

In the 2.5 - 3 hour long morning session, UX Researcher performs usability tests repeatedly. Meanwhile, the rest of the team monitors the tests and takes notes.

NOON SESSION

In the 4.5 - 5 hour long noon session, the problems determined in the morning session are being discussed and solution proposals are developed.

PARTICIPANTS & ATTENDEES

In addition to the customer team, the workshop should include 1 UX Researcher and at least 1 UX Designer as Userspots team. Total number of participants can vary from 5 to 12. Fewer or more participants can reduce productivity.

PREPARATION

APPOINTMENT OF THE TASKS

The Ux researcher examines the interface and creates test scenarios. The number of tasks should not exceed 5. When tasks are too short and simple, if necessary, the number of tasks can be increased. However; as a general principle, only critical functions should be identified and focused. Once the tasks are identified, the scenario document is shared with the customer and get confirmation.

PERFORMING THE PILOT TEST

Pilot testing is a rehearsal of your research study, allowing you to test your research approach with a small number of test participants before you conduct your main study. Although this is an additional step, it may be the time best spent on any research project.

After approval, 1 pilot test is performed and shared with the customer. In case of a problem, necessary updates or corrections are made and re-tested.

NUMBER AND DURATION OF TESTS

An ideal test should not exceed 25 - 30 minutes, as the tests will be carried out consecutively and only in the afternoon session. If this time is exceeded after the pilot test, the tasks should be reviewed and shortened if necessary. 3 - 6 tests can be done according to the duration and difficulty of tests.

PREPARATION OF MATERIALS

Once critical functions and tasks have been identified, screenshots are taken and large printouts are prepared. These outputs should include screenshots of all the pages that are going to be examined during the tests. Outputs are prepared and hung in the room before the workshop. In addition to outputs, a sufficient number of post-it and pen should be available for writing the problems and suggestions.

SELECTING USERS

Users are selected according to the specified criterias and given an appointment. If users do not come to the test (do not appear at the workshop day), the workshop process would interrupt so a reminder must be made from the previous day and even a backup user should be set if possible. The participation award to be given to the users depends on the budget of the project but should be sufficiently motivating for them to come to the test.

PRELIMNIARY

Some teams may remain very quiet, show no participation no matter what. It may not be easy for the UX team to develop ideas that will motivate everyone at the point where everyone is silent and the eyes are on the designer. Therefore, the workshop can be better prepared by conducting a short Benchmark and idea development session prior to the workshop.If everyone remains silent, the medium can be revived by talking about these ideas.

DESIGN PROCESS

UX 101 AND WARMING UP

PRELIMINARY PRESENTATION

Some members of the workshop team may not have sufficient knowledge and knowledge of UX. Active participation of participants who feel weak in this area they may be badly affected, even if they have ideas, they may find it difficult to express. Therefore, where necessary, an informative preliminary presentation on basic UX concepts should be made before starting work.

ANNOUNCMENT OF THE WORKSHOP CONTENT

Before starting, the workshop plan and its content should be briefly explained. This description should include the timetable, content and purpose of the study. The time plan should be hung in a public place or distributed to the participants.

ICE BREAKER

In case the team members do not know each other closely and feel comfortable, small games and exercises can be used as Icebreaker to reduce tension and fuse the participants. The aim is to make people meet and get used to each other. After warming up, they can express their ideas more comfortably when workshop begins.

USABILITY TESTS

In the first half of the workshop, UX Researcher performs usability tests and records. UX Designer and the rest of the team follow the tests from the test monitoring room and note the problems that arise.

DISCUSSING THE PROBLEMS

In the afternoon, UX Researcher meets the rest of the team and listens to the problems they have raised. He also adds his own findings and comments. Among these problems, the most common and the most critical ones are determined. If necessary, the relevant parts of the tests can be quickly watched again. The identified problems are written in post-it and placed in the relevant fields on the screen outputs.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

HOW TO DEVELOP AN IDEA?
Solution suggestions for the determined problems are started to be developed. The goal is to involve the customer team rather than the UX team. Therefore, it should be supportive, not directing, and participants should be encouraged to express their opinions. At this stage, there is no problem in making ideas seem pale or difficult to do. The important thing is to come up with as many ideas as possible and develop creative thinking.

UX RECOMMENDATIONS

At this stage, ideas are gradually made more realistic and sedate. Suggestions are selected and prioritized. Outcomes of idea development are turned into stream from ideas. At this point, UX Designer can play a more guiding role if necessary.

CLOSING AND SCHEDULE

According to the time status and number of suggestions, the suggestion document can be examined and the time plan of the future work with the customer and the Project Manager can be prepared. If there is no time to discuss this, the UX team examines the document after the workshop, creates the time schedule and then submits it to the customer's approval.
